Alby Hall Weekend

Timaru Woodturners Club

We have the privilege of inviting you to a weekend of wood turning with the great Alby Hall.

Those into woodturning say their craft has never been recognised by way of an official exchange of gifts between world leaders.
That changed when Prime Minister John Key presented China's President Xi Jinping with a 'kiwi-panda ball', an orb fashioned from more than 1000 small rounds of New Zealand native wood featuring a kiwi on one side and a panda on the other. The majority of the wood was kauri supplied by Awanui's Ancient Kauri Kingdom, and the craftsmen were Alby Hall and his son (and apprentice) Dylan.
Mr Hall, a five-time winner of the woodturning title at the annual National Woodskills Competition, was at the Ancient Kauri Kingdom for 17 years, and in that time has produced some extraordinary work. This was the first time he contributed to making international history.

Saturday 19 July Sunday 20 July 2014 9am-4pm'ish

Saturday 19th July Alby will do a demonstration taking us from inspiration of a piece to actual completion.

Creative Inspiration.

"I can make anything, but I can't think of anything to make." That kind of statement I have heardmany times while talking to wood turners, and other craft people. I believe creativity is in all of us,but it has, in some people, been forced onto the background by the matter of fact life we have nowlive. Some of our education, and our jobs, have focused our way of thinking and doing in our dailylives to the point of our creativity becoming unimportant. I know that creativity can be reawakened in most peoplethrough learning to see again, just like we all did as children. Seeing, as a part of creativity, is to be able to allow what youreveryday life is showing you that can be developed into ideas, then into designs that can be made by using a medium, in ourcase woodturning or carving, and all the associated techniques we use in combination with our medium.

Sunday the 20th July will be a workshop where Alby will guide us through completing a multi piece seed pod.

In Alby's words if you can make a natural edge bowl, it is possible to make a multi piece seed pod.
Numbers on the Sunday will be limited to 30 wood-turners.

We still have a few things to sort out. Minor details like pricing, food and accommodation.
If you want to be part of this, please let me know ASAP (As Soon As Possible). If you require billeting or need accommodation, let me know and I am sure we can sort something out.
Watch this space for more news as it comes to hand.
