National Association of Woodturners was founded in the mid eighties by a small group of hobby woodturners. They were aware that there were hundreds of aspiring woodturners in every corner of New Zealand trying to teach themselves the basics, often with very mixed results. Clearly there was a need to bring people together to share their skills and experiences.
In 1986 the National Association of Woodturners New Zealand Inc. was established to promote, foster and encourage the art and craft of woodturning. NAW has grown steadily and we now have around eleven hundred members including 45 Clubs or Guilds.
Most of the clubs not only catered for turners but also other wood crafts such as carving, intaglio, furniture making, wood sculpture and many form of wood decorating. In July 2004 the association agreed to incorporate all woodskills and consequently the name of the association has been chaged to "National Association of Woodworkers New Zealand Inc. to reflect this move.
We are a healthy vibrant organisation that is gaining strength year by year.

As well as giving you affordable and discounted access through demonstrations and tutorials, to top overseas and New Zealand teachers, there are also opportunities to enter your work in NAW sponsored exhibitions. Many of the events in our calendar give you an opportunity to mix socially and to trade ideas and techniques. This is especially true of our Jamborees. |

Members of NAW have access to our Education Opportunity Grants Programme. These typically give grants to help with expenses for travelling, tuition and workshops. Others are available to clubs and guilds to provide assistance in bringing in demonstrators from other areas. If you're a member of NAW then you are not only part of the active woodskills community in New Zealand but you also have access to the world wide woodturning and woodcrafting community. |
